Introducing Dr Marcin Sokolowski, Support Scientist
Marcin Sokolowski received his Masters Degree in Physics from the University of Warsaw, Poland in 1998 and Ph.D. Degree in Physics from the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) in Warsaw, Poland in 2008. In between he had 5-years experience as a senior software programmer.
During his PhD he developed software algorithms for finding optical transients using a network of wide-field robotic telescopes “Pi of the Sky”. After completing his PhD, he continued developing algorithms and expanding the network of telescopes. In 2012, he moved to Australia and transitioned to radio astronomy.
Initially, Marcin was developing a single antenna experiment to detect the Epoch of Reionisation signal. Later he started to work on the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) and SKA-Low prototype stations. As the MWA staff scientist he supported telescope operations and used the MWA to look for Fast Radio Bursts (FRB) at low radio frequencies.
Recently as a member of an international team he was commissioning, testing, and realising early science verification of SKA-Low prototype stations operated by Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA). He has also been leading development of a novel GPU-based software pipeline for image-based FRB searches. Marcin joined AusSRC in October as support scientist and brings extensive experience in low-frequency radio astronomy as well as in astronomy software development.
