Introducing Dr Glen Rees

Dr Glen Rees is a Senior Software Engineer joining the AusSRC, bringing a unique combination of radio astronomy expertise and extensive industry experience in data science, software engineering, and DevOps.

Glen completed his PhD in Astrophysics at Macquarie University in collaboration with CSIRO, where he worked with large-scale datasets from ASKAP, ATCA and Magellan. His research focused on data reduction, calibration, and analysis of radio surveys, as well as developing and optimising code for high-performance computing environments.

Following his academic career, Glen transitioned into industry, where he has spent over eight years designing, building, and maintaining distributed, cloud-based systems. His work has included the development of end-to-end data pipelines, real-time analytics platforms, and machine learning services deployed across Kubernetes and cloud environments. He has led projects from initial concept through to long-term production use, working closely with clients and cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, reliable solutions.

Glen has extensive experience with microservices architectures, containerisation, CI/CD pipelines, and database design, primarily using Python and cloud-native tooling. His projects have supported applications ranging from healthcare analytics to large-scale recommendation systems, often operating at high-volume and requiring robust, maintainable infrastructure.

With a strong background in both scientific research and modern software engineering, Glen is particularly interested in bridging the gap between domain scientists and technical systems. He is excited to contribute to the AusSRC’s mission by helping design and deliver the infrastructure and services needed to support the next generation of radio astronomy research.
