AUSTRALIAN SKA REGIONAL CENTRE

Are you working on SKA Precursor Science?

The AusSRC Community Engagement Workshop is for you!

What: An all-day workshop to explore how AusSRC can support researchers working on SKA Precursor Science.

Where: CSIRO Auditorium, Australian Resources Research Centre (ARRC), Perth, and Online.

When: Thursday, December 5, 2024, 9am to 2pm AWST.

Register here by 28 November, 2024 to secure your spot.

The Australian SKA science community is invited to present at the AusSRC Community Engagement Workshop.

The workshop is a chance to raise awareness about the needs and requirements of the SKA Science community, learn about the work of AusSRC, and the development and support we can offer to help facilitate Australian SKA precursor science.

Participants are invited to deliver a short presentation to discuss their science project, its requirements, and their proposal or ideas for AusSRC support, even if these ideas are tentative or exploratory.

With the AusSRC team present, project teams can expect:

  • Discussion on the feasibility of their proposal or ideas;
  • Input on design and implementation from AusSRC science and software development teams;
  • To learn about and build upon existing science projects, workflows, and services AusSRC has developed and supports

Who is the workshop for?

Proposals and ideas should relate to specific science projects and how AusSRC can help to support or facilitate that science. These may touch on various areas within the software development or scientific support domains, such as:

  1. Workflow / pipeline development (adapting tools)
    e.g. “I have some scripts that carry out some essential steps on our project’s data, but I want to integrate it into
    something more streamlined and automated that operates seamlessly within our workflow that is run on this HPC facility.”
    e.g. “I’d like our pipeline to be wrapped up into a web service that anyone in our team can log into and interact with.”
  2. Software development (creating or enhancing tools)
    e.g. “I’m not sure what data structure or algorithm to use to solve this problem!”
    e.g. “Our pipeline takes too long to run! We need to adapt it to GPUs!”
  3. Science support (enabling science and wielding tools)
    e.g. “I want to use this tool, but I’m not sure how it works, or which parameters to use!”
    e.g. “I’m not sure how to approach this problem, or what tools or algorithms may be useful.”

Projects may consider use of AusSRC computing infrastructure, such as our current cloud-computing platforms, and any future AusSRC academic or commercial computing resources. They may also utilise existing project on other facilities, and should indicate the nature of these.

Expressions of Interest and Proposal Submissions to Follow

Following this workshop, AusSRC will call for expressions of interest, after which, selected projects will be requested to submit proposals.

Successful proposals will be awarded a fixed-term project, within a timeline estimated to match the development or support work involved. At the end of this period, software development projects will be handed over to the AusSRC operations team, to deploy the workflow, pipeline, or service on the selected infrastructure.

This particular round of proposals will be focussed on Australian SKA precursor science (e.g. leveraging ASKAP or MWA data), but also invites contributions for projects related to the SKA and its key science goals. This includes science projects making use of the MeerKAT telescope, in collaboration with the Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy (IDIA), and projects making use of multi-wavelength data, in collaboration with Data Central.

We encourage workshop participants to consider any existing or potential industry collaborations, or translation projects applying your science or techniques in other domains.
